IPL Auction Set for India Return: Goa Emerges as Frontrunner to Host 2027 Player Bidding in December

24 September 2026 ·

MUMBAI — The marquee Indian Premier League (IPL) player auction is poised to return home, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finalizing plans to host the bidding event for the 2027 edition on domestic soil, with Goa emerging as the primary host destination.

The event, expected to take place in mid-to-late December, will mark the end of the IPL auction’s recent overseas footprint. For the past two cycles, the BCCI staged the player market abroad—taking the auction to Dubai in late 2023 and Jeddah in late 2024—primarily to accommodate expanding global broadcast windows and logistics around international venues.

However, discussions within the board and feedback from franchise stakeholders have tilted the preference back toward an Indian setting. Goa, renowned for its hospitality infrastructure and relaxed seaside environment, offers both the privacy required for high-stakes franchise deliberations and the state-of-the-art facilities needed for a global broadcast spectacle.

Unlike the extensive, multi-day mega auction format that reshuffles entire squads every few seasons, the upcoming gathering will operate as a mini-auction. Franchises will focus primarily on filling tactical gaps, managing release lists, and deploying residual purse funds rather than overhauling their primary core rosters.

Logistical teams and event managers from the BCCI have reportedly initiated preliminary venue surveys across premier five-star convention resorts in Goa. Official confirmation, along with the announcement of the player registration deadline and final auction dates, is expected following the board’s upcoming governance meetings in October.
